Development and Prototype
When you choose Michigan Paper Die for your packaging, we will discuss your goals and marketing strategy with you in order to design an effective package that reflects your branding and help you stand out from the crowd. Our expert prototyping skills take into account the size, weight, and shape of your product to ensure proper execution and we do not outsource any aspect of creating your prototype. All software and machine applications are located in-house. Additionally, all dies are built in-house.
Steel Rule Die Construction
Our die-cutting dies are constructed internally, using state-of-the-art technology to ensure the most accurate of tolerances. We begin with specic CAD software to design and construct-ready the die, which allows to get near-perfect results every time!
We also have the ability to import die-line files into our software to speed up the design process. Dies are designed from supplied information, typically an .eps file, laser proof, mockup or press sheet. Once the die line is complete, we construct a prototype from our sample-making table to ensure that your piece is built exactly to your specifications. Upon internal approval of this prototype, we begin the die construction process.
The same le that was used to generate the prototype is sent to our CNC router, where the die board is cut with extreme accuracy. As the die board is being prepared, we utilize the same le from the prototype and die board to begin the rule bending process. We currently operate an automatic rule-bending machine that has pinpoint accuracy. Our die-making equipment allows us to work on multiple dies at the same time, increasing efficiency while maintaining quality. By constructing our dies internally, we have the ability to make changes on the y.
Foil Stamping and Embossing Dies
Dies are sent out utilizing a supplied file for die construction. The typical lead-time on foil stamp dies is 2-3 days. Standard embossing dies are 3 days; also multilevel or brass dies are on a per quote basis for production times. All dies are constructed with copper for foil stamping and single level embossing. Multi-level or sculptured emboss dies including combination type dies are constructed using brass.
Die Cutting
We have three 28"x 40” automatic die-cutters manufactured by Bobst. In addition to being able to die-cut, score, kiss-cut and perforate; these machines offer inline interior stripping capabilities. This allows us to remove punch holes and windows all in one process. We’re capable of performing these processes on materials ranging from text or bond paper, cover weight paper, chipboard material, corrugated material, many different plastic composites, magnetic material, kiss-cut or sticker material. Thickness of material generally ranges from .002 - .080 or 2-point through 80-point thickness.
Foil Stamping
Our foil stamping ranges from pieces as small as a business card, all the way up to a full 28" x 40W sheet. We carry a wide variety of foil colors, utilizing various brands of foil like API. Crown Roll Leaf, Kurz, and Maple Roll Leaf. Swatch books are available to help in the selection process.
Embossing
Much like foil stamping, we handle a wide variety of stock types and sizes. We've set ourselves apart in the die-cutting arena by working comfortably with single and multi-level embossing programs. Our capabilities extend to sheets slightly larger than 35 x 49".
Folding
The diversity of equipment on our floor allows a wide array of folding options, ranging from four pages to 16-page signatures and all standard types of folding. We truly thrive in working with unusual types of folding to eliminate hand bindery. This has become a value-added service to our customers.
High Speed In-Line Gluing
We have four machines that we utilize for our gluing applications. The specific type of project and material used determines which machine is used. Our straight-line glue equipment is built for the folding carton industry and is able to reach extremely high production rates. We see a vast array of side seam, tuck type and crash lock boxes. Our capabilities include gluing several types of folding cartons including partition type cartons. This machine is capable of working with various types of paperboard boxes and folders. This versatility allows us to conform to handle gluing applications that can relieve hand-type bindery. We have built a fantastic reputation as the go-to company for unusual folding and gluing applications. Based off our continued success and experience, we’re extremely competitive with gluing prices.
High Speed Fugitive Gluing
This type of process has become very popular within direct-mail campaigns. It eliminates wafer sealing and brings unit costs down considerably. We have two state-of-the-art glue systems that allow us to apply the glue in various patterns and techniques.
Tipping
We've quickly become the premier source for tipping one piece to another. We have experienced several different formats and application styles. This includes several substrates such as plastic, paper, cardboard, magnets, DVD's, poly packaged material and a wide variety of packaged items. Typically these items are tipped onto a carrier constructed of paper, plastic or board, saving time and money by eliminating the need for hand-insertion. We generally use our fugitive glue system to adhere theses contents together, however, we can permanently adhere them if needed.
Window Patching
This process is mostly used for paperboard carton manufacturing. Most cartons used for decorative packaging in the stores that have a clear film window allowing you to see the contents. Please call to discuss specific projects requiring this application.
Stitching
Our non-automated single or double head allows us to handle custom projects.
Drilling
Most jobs that we’re involved in allow us to punch holes while die-cutting. This eliminates an additional service and cost to our customers. However, there are projects that require only at trim work and holes. To accomplish this, we have multiple machines capable of drilling your stock.
Hand Bindery
Our reputation for on-time delivery and attention to detail has helped this department generate 30% of our business. Our staff can collate, poly-bag, hand-tape, tip, sort, and assemble an array of products. Projects that are handled multiple times for hand construction are very delicate. Our staff prides themselves in ensuring the utmost quality to guarantee consistency throughout the order.
Shrink-Wrapping
We can batch count your order for specific package requirements. If Michigan Paper Die is already nishing this project for you, we can have the specic counts coming off of previous equipment eliminating a need for additional labor.
Warehouse and Distributions
We have approximately 20,000 square feet of storage within our building available for lease. We also have two loading areas - 1 for semi trucks and one for street level. In addition to the space for lease, we have systems in place for inventory and pick-up from both UPS and Fed Ex daily.

Because of our position in the overall scope of projects, we've built a reputation built on efficiency. Typically, we are the last to handle a project and our speed in completing the project can determine the job's success. We understand this role and accept it; we have built our reputation on it.
